CONSERVATION STATUS

Endangered

The Black-faced Spoonbill breeds on rocky islets off the west coast of the Korean peninsula, and on a couple of coastal sites in China and Russia. This rare species winters in intertidal estuaries in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and at scattered sites in southeastern Asia. It forages for crustaceans and small marine creatures in estuaries and requires this habitat for survival. The size of the population is believed to be around 2,670 birds and has been given a rating of Endangered by the IUCN because the population is expected to decrease as estuaries in its wintering range are lost to development.
